Na wat? Daar gaat het om in The morning after. Actrice op retour Alex (Fonda) wordt wakker naast een dode man. Ze was, zoals vaker, dronken. Maar verder? 'He had a heart attack?' vraagt haar vervreemde echtgenoot Jackie (Julia) over de telefoon. 'Yeah,' zegt Alex, 'from a knife in the chest.' Heeft Alex het gedaan in een vlaag van verstandsverbijstering, of haar gladde echtgenoot, of de begrijpende Turner (Bridges) die ze toevallig tegenkomt en die haar wil helpen? The morning after had, de plot welbeschouwd, gemakkelijk standaard of zelfs B kunnen worden. Maar Fonda's verbijsterend oprechte optreden - genomineerd met een Oscar - voorkomt dat.
