OBITUARIES — Amos and Sons Funeral Homes (2024)

Johnston, SC- Funeral Services for Mr. William Carlos Hutto, Sr. will be held 12 Noon, Monday, July 29, 2024, at the Brookland Baptist Church, 1066 Sunset Blvd, West Columbia, SC 29169 with the Reverend Charles B. Jackson, Sr., Senior Pastor, and the Reverend Nicky T. Wilson Presiding.

Mr. Hutto will lie in state at the church 2 hours prior to the service. Committal and interment will take place at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery, Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at 2:00 pm. Public viewing will be Sunday 11:00 am - 5:00 pm. Visitation will follow from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the Amos & Sons Funeral Home.

William Carlos “Will” Hutto Sr., the second son of the late Mr. Homer and Mrs. Earnestine Hutto, was born on September 30, 1949. He quietly passed away in his loving wife's arms at 5:15 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at the age of 74. His life, marked by resilience, courage, and an unwavering commitment to service, has left an indelible mark on us all, for which we are deeply grateful.

Born in West Columbia, South Carolina, William graduated from Lakeview High School as the president of the Class of 1967 before enlisting in the US Army. Serving with honor in Germany during the Vietnam War, he exemplified bravery and dedication to his country. He attended Columbia Junior College and earned a certificate in Business Management from Maryland University following his return home from service.

William was multi-faceted beyond his military service.A testament to his skills and determination, he was the first African American Lab Technician at Allied Chemical.He was a disc jockey in the 70’s and head basketball coach. He was a skilled chess player, athlete, hunter, and fisherman.Will was an accomplished horseback rider and dog trainer, finding solace and joy in the connection between man and beast. Well into his senior years, Will continued to serve others as a skilled handyman, specializing in plumbing and electrical work. William served with dedication as President of the Lakeview Alumni Association, where his leadership brought about meaningful and positive changes that he was immensely proud of. He demanded excellence from those around him.

Throughout his life, Will was admired and respected, imparting wisdom and knowledge to countless people. He was known for his strength, compassion, and ability to inspire others. Many remember him for his great skill and aptitude in everything he set out to do and for the life lessons he shared. His family and friends recall his uncanny ability to beat anyone in a game of spades, bid whist, horse racing, basketball, tennis, or anything he set his mind to, a true testament of his character and the profound impact he had on so many people, for which we are deeply appreciative.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Earnestine Hutto. Two of his brothers are waiting to receive him at the gates: James Edward and Robert Bernard Hutto. His Aunt Delta Cave will also be there to greet him.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Pamela Denise Andrews Hutto, of the home. His children: Michelle (Tyrone) Boykin of Charlotte, NC; Samantha (Haziq) El-Amin of Richmond, VA; Catherine (Johnny) Davis of Atlanta, GA; William Carlos (Laquinta) Hutto Jr., of West Columbia, SC; Monica (Darryl) Buchanan of Raleigh, NC; Madison (Everette) Muller of Columbia, SC; and Jessica (Robert) Davis of Lexington, SC. He leaves to cherish his 34 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. The siblings he leaves behind are John H. Hutto of Spring Lake, NC; Toshia M. Johnson of West Columbia, SC; C. Elaine (Jackie) Martin-Carlton of Hephzibah, GA; Helen A. (Lester) Sherrill of West Columbia, SC; Faye Hutto (Robert) Jeffcoat of West Columbia, SC; Wilodene D. (Terry) Hutto of West Columbia, SC; Dorothy L. (Carl) Moses of Columbia, SC; Daniel E. (Pamela) Hutto, of West Columbia, SC; Karan L. (Eddie) Watkins of Hopkins, SC; Darrell A. Hutto of West Columbia, SC. He also leaves behind his in-laws: Anita Andrews of North Augusta, SC; Levi (Gwendolyn) Andrews Jr. of Fairfax, VA; Debra (Rodney) Cartwright of Bowie, MD; Alfreda Turner of North Augusta, SC; and Carla Andrews of Fort Washington, MD. He will be dearly missed by his special Aunt Norma McCray of Jacksonville, FL. A host of loving nieces and nephews are left to honor William's life. Special family and friends: Carmel Frith, Harry Jivers, Katie Young, Ethel S. Marshall, Joe (Bowleg) McDaniels, Danny Jones, Wendell Rowe, Melvin Young, Donald Jackson, Rick Deese, Tommy Burton, Valerie Bellamy, and many, many more. William will be deeply missed by his loving family, friends, and all who knew him. His legacy of resilience and passion for learning will continue to inspire future generations.
