What is asbestos?

Asbestos was a widely used building material, popular in the UK from the 1940s untilthe 1980s when it was banned. We now know that Asbestos is incredibly harmful to lung function, and working with asbestos without the right protection can lead to life-shortening illnesses. These include asbestosis, asbestos-induced lung cancer, mesothelioma and pleural thickening. If you or a loved one has an asbestos-related disease, then you may be able to claim.

Where is Asbestos Found?

Asbestos can be found in any industrial or residential building that was built or refurbished before the year 2000, and was common in a lot of building materials before it was banned. Some common materials where asbestos is present include:

  • Asbestos cement
  • AIB in panels
  • Tiles
  • Around doors and around boilers
  • Textiles including fire blankets
  • Textured decorative coatings on walls and ceilings including artex

How can I find out if I’ve been exposed to Asbestos?

Asbestos is often present in buildings built before the year 2000, and there’s particular risk of exposure when it’s disturbed. However, it’s people who work with building materials on a daily basis who are the most risk. You might have a greater risk of health problems from asbestos exposure at work if you have or had one of the following jobs:

  • Shipyard workers
  • Demolition workers
  • Construction workers, including architects and surveyors
  • Maintenance workers, including caretakers, tradespeople like electricians, carpenters/joiners and plumbers, painters and decorators, roofers, plasterers, and people who install gas, electricity, fire and burglar alarms
  • Power plant or chemical plant workers
  • Industrial workers, including people who work in a mine or factory where materials containing asbestos are processed
  • Engineers, including heating and ventilation, insulators, telecommunications, and cable layers

What is Asbestosis?

Asbestosis is a disease where the lung tissue hardens. It is associated with prolonged and heavy exposure to asbestos dust. Symptoms of asbestosis include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent cough
  • Dry crackling noise in your lungs
  • Chest pain
  • Lack of or difficulty sleeping
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss

Asbestosis is a slowly progressive disease; it usually takes between 15 and 30 years to develop, after initial exposure to asbestos. If you think you’ve been affected, get in touch with our team to discuss making a claim for asbestos compensation.

Making Asbestos Compensation Claims

Can I Claim for Asbestos Exposure?

Because asbestos-related illness can take years to show, some victims do not know they may be able to make a claim. They may also think it is too late. Speaking to The Compensation Experts can help clarify your situation. We can provide you with the information so you can make the right choice for you.

We work with select asbestos solicitor who specialise in related illnesses. Whether you are claiming for yourself or a loved one, you can expect your solicitor to gather the necessary evidence. This will prove the illness could have been avoided if the right precautions had been taken. Millions of British workers were exposed to asbestos up to the early 1980s. While many employers were aware of the risks associated with the material, they did not adequately educate or protect their staff. This led to tragic consequences for them and their families.

Asbestos Claims After Death

Asbestos-related illnesses can be fatal, but this doesn’t mean you can’t make asbestos claims on the deceased’s behalf. Usually, you’ll have three years from the date of death to make a claim.

No Win No Fee Asbestos Compensation Claims

We certainly appreciate that our clients may be unwilling or unable to pay legal fees upfront with no guarantee of a positive result.

The solicitors we work with operate on a no win no fee basis to remove the financial risk associated with claiming compensation.

Typically, customers pay 25% including VAT of the compensation amount that is recovered by our third-party law firms, although this is subject to your individual circ*mstances and the actual fee may be more or less than this. For example, you may be required to pay an additional fee for other costs such as after-the-event (ATE) insurance. Termination fees may apply.
